A growing number of people on Deviantart fancy themselves part of an "anti social justice" movement. In their eyes, white, straight men are being unfairly bullied and oppressed by women, minorities and the LGBT community. To them, requests for equal treatment somehow go too far, and backlash against the prejudiced is somehow a greater evil than prejudice was to begin with. Eventually I'll be writing something like this for racial issues, but for now, we're going to focus on the increasingly hostile, extremist "anti-feminist" subculture and the faultiest talking points of their agenda.
Argument: "You're the real misogynist by painting women as victims"
This common "point" is a surefire way to make yourself look like a remorseless villain. The idea behind this sad tactic is to make the "feminist" feel like they're insulting women by insinuating that discrimination affects women at all, the idea being that only "weak" women would ever have a problem with misogynistic behavior to begin with. It's a distraction maneuver, dismissing any actual points raised in favor of an elaborately yet still thinly veiled "NO, U!"
Argument: "Men only become feminists because they'll get more sex"
This one is barely worthy of acknowledgment, but it's still bafflingly common, hurled even by people who otherwise make a strong effort to dress up their opinion with so-called "logic." Ironically, doesn't this claim only demonstrate internalized sexism against men? Doesn't it imply that men are only motivated by sex? It also makes the bizarre presumption that women are so impressed by feminist attitudes that it can be the only deciding factor in having sex with a man, despite there having never been any shortage of men who support feminist ideals. A feminist man isn't special, but a basic norm of society.
Argument: "If feminists cared about equality they would just be called humanists"
This common one is based on the idea that both men and women face equal forms of oppression, and therefore, feminism is "no longer needed" and represents only an attempt to elevate women above men.
Unfortunately, discrimination against women exists virtually everywhere in the world. Wherever you go, certain things are much more difficult for women than for men, and always have been. It was only centuries ago that even mainstream "scientific" and "medical" literature asserted that women were naturally weaker, more hysterical, and less intelligent than men. These attitudes were rooted in our culture recently enough for almost every modern institution, from the judicial system to corporate practices, to have originally been built in the same environment.
Women are treated unequally. Feminism is the effort to amend that. When both men and women face exactly the same levels and same types of discrimination, we can begin to talk about just a "humanist" movement.
Argument: "False rape accusations are an understated issue"
Now we're getting to the factual claims, rather than just the logical fallacies, that we can actually debunk with objective studies. There's a claim perpetuated by the anti-feminism crowd that false rape accusations are an epidemic problem, are not taken seriously enough, and that this somehow, in some way, can be pinned on feminists.
All false crime reports are serious, but do false accusations of rape really fly back and forth like Christmas cards, and is it really "feminism" that perpetuates it?
According to the Federal Bureau of Investigation, false accusations occur at a rate of 2-8%, the same as other categories of crime. This is not, it should be pointed out, solely cases of women accusing men. This statistic includes all false allegations of sexual assault, including, for instance, parents who accuse others of molesting their children, men accusing other men of intimidating them into sex, and rapists who frame other people for their own crimes. Here are some papers on the statistics and on the FBI's methodology for reporting and categorizing sex crime:
www.fbi.gov/about-us/cjis/ucr/…
www.icdv.idaho.gov/conference/…
So, while false reports happen and are severe, they are not a special, unique problem faced by men or particularly downplayed by feminists. False allegations of murder, physical abuse, drug abuse and theft are all common as well.
It should also be pointed out that actual rape victims are highly likely to withdraw accusations when faced with ridicule and mistrust, fearing a life of abuse and stigma. Our culture tends to treat victims as "stained" or "broken" at best and as deserving "sluts" at worst. Thus, many so-called "false" reports would simply be the accuser intimidated into falsely backing down. Such is likely the case for the MRA's beloved "41%" statistic, which came from only a single small study of 109 rape reports in the same city, 20 years ago, and went by police records. The veracity of police data is something I'll be going over heavily when we get to talking about racism and hate crime in an upcoming journal.
Argument: "Rape of women is OVERstated"
Hand-in-hand with the above, anti-feminists believe that women do not suffer as much rape as "the media" or "feminist propaganda" would have you believe, or suffer the same exact rate that men do. They commonly cite a claim that one in five women may be sexually assaulted in their lifetime as an example of a "feminist" lie...but where does that statistic originally come from?
Once again, we can cite an exhaustive government study.
This particular study looked at over 16,000 people. Nearly one in five women admitted to being victims of sexual violence, while only one in 71 men did the same, though one in seven men reported suffering physically violent abuse at the hands of a partner, again not as many as women, but certainly a large number overlooked by mainstream media.
"Feminists ignore male genital mutilation"
This is one of anti-feminism's favorite topics, one of the two or three things "Men's Rights Advocates" will bring up in almost every single argument. Unfortunately, it only serves as a shining example of how their broken reasoning functions.
Feminism is about tackling things that disproportionately affect women. Ways in which society treats women worse than men.
That is precisely what we see in the issue of genital mutilation.
"Male genital mutilation," or circumcision, is a practice conducted on nearly 90% of white males. The practice began for hygenic purposes and there remains evidence that circumcision can reduce the risk of infection by HIV. Later, it came back into fashion under the incorrect notion that it could prevent masturbation, but circumcision does not reduce the sensitivity of the penis or ability to have sex, and complications are rare. Circumcision may not be necessary and it should probably be discouraged since it is done without the consent of the patient, but it does not have a negative impact on a man's ability to live his life.
Conversely, female genital mutilation, also conducted on up to 90% of women in some countries, involves slicing off the clitoris, the equivalent of removing the end of a penis, and may also include slicing off the labia and sewing shut the vagina. This altogether eliminates the woman's ability to feel pleasure from sex, and in fact, usually makes sex painful. The reasons for this procedure are purely cultural, with no known health benefits, are technically outlawed in most countries even where it continues to be performed on almost all newborn girls.
Please read up on how these procedures are performed courtesy the World Health Organization.
Genital mutilation is unequivocally a women's issue. There is no comparison between the removal of a man's foreskin and the grotesque, torturous and sadistic procedures performed on millions of young girls to control their lives. Men normally report no discomfort from having been circumcised and no difficulty leading a normal sex life, whereas the victims of female genital mutilation suffer life-long pain and the capacity for a sex life taken away from them completely.
Like it or not, it will continue to be a women's issue until female genital mutilation is ONLY as serious as circumcision. Both are better eliminated altogether, but the removal of foreskins is nowhere near an equivalent or comparable horror.
Argument: "Women just don't want certain jobs."
Bring up the issue of hiring biases or institutionalized sexism in career fields, and the anti-feminist will invariably claim that fewer women hold those jobs because women are naturally less interested in them.
This, of course, needs only common sense to dismiss. There is no reason women would "by nature" be less interested in science or technical jobs, or heavy labor. There would be only cultural explanations for such a trend, the active discouragement girls face from a young age to pursue what are traditionally seen as "masculine" career roles.
Beyond this basic, self-evident truth is the statistical fact that just as many women do pursue the same jobs as men in college, they simply aren't being hired as often. It really is that simple. When a man and a woman apply for the same job with the same qualifications, the man is more likely to get a call back.
This is particularly true of science and technological jobs. The industries themselves conducted the studies demonstrating this fact:
"New Research Proves Gender Bias Extraordinarily Prevalent in Stem Careers"
Scientific American: "Study Shows Gender Bias in Science"
Even the response to this scientific data shows significant hostility towards women.
Further, studies find that the gender bias is perpetuated by men as well as women, i.e, women in the position to hire someone are still more likely to hire a man. Nobody is saying that only men are misogynistic; there is a deeply rooted attitude among the population as a whole that women are less capable of the same tasks.
Bear in mind, it was only decades ago that the rift was even greater. There are people alive today who remember a time when women were flat-out barred from certain jobs under the notion that they were weaker and frailer. Some of the same people who were openly denying women jobs in the 50's and 60's are still corporate CEO's and politicians today. That these biased all could have abruptly gone away in our lifetimes is an absurd notion, and scientifically disproven again and again.
Argument: "Child custody favors women"
This is another favorite complaint of the Men's Rights crowd - that apparently, courts are prone to favoring the mother when child custody is brought up.
There are, of course, cultural reasons why this sounds true. It makes a sort of sense that perhaps people are inclined to favor the parent whose body actually incubated the child in question, regardless of their suitability as a parent otherwise.
However, the fact of the matter is that men simply aren't as likely as women to pursue child custody, and when they do, half them win it anyway.
A bias towards mothers was, at one time, the norm. It became the norm during an era when women were still almost universally the at-home caregivers and men were expected to work jobs. It was known as the "tender years doctrine," and it was abolished in 1994 throughout most of America, in light of the vastly higher rates of women in the work force compared to when it was first written.
In other words, this is simply no longer an issue. It started for arguably legitimate reasons and has gone the way of the Dodo long ago.
Argument: "Male Rape Isn't Taken as Seriously"
This claim is actually true. Unfortunately, for whatever reason, people continue to chalk it up to the influence of "feminism" when nothing could be farther from the truth.
The notion that men cannot be raped is a relic of the same notion that women are inherently "weaker" than men. Men are not taken seriously as victims because a large part of our culture still sees men as powerful controllers over women by default. Our culture shames and ridicules men who show "feminine" qualities, and those "feminine" qualities are generally defined as forms of sensitivity, love, emotion and vulnerability. The systematic denial of male victims is a symptom of misogyny, not misandry. It's a by-product of hyper-masculine attitudes dating back to the dark ages and beyond.
As it happens, the majority of male rape does not occur in prisons, as we're trained to believe, but in the military:
www.gq.com/long-form/male-mili…
In fact, rape by peers or superior officers is a more common cause of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder in military personnel than combat situations, and they find themselves helpless to press charges. An actual military doctor is quoted in this article claiming that men do not get raped. A male doctor. Just like the male superiors who commit the rape, and their own male higher-ups who excuse, deny, and cover it up. At no point is a "feminist" involved in any of this process.
Argument: "Men are just as objectified."
There can be no denying that our culture puts enormous pressure on women to be attractive. You need only take a glance at America's celebrities to see what we value; men can get by looking wildly diverse and are even considered handsomer as they age, but women rely on plastic surgery and radical dieting to retain the same homogeneous look well into their 50's and 60's. They need to look as young as possible, they need prominent breasts and they need to be thin. Any who stray from this even slightly can become the targets of relentless ridicule; whole magazines boast "shocking" photo collections of celebrity women showing wrinkles, cellulite, a slight belly or the lack of a thigh gap.
For women, it's be sexy or be the butt of a joke.
...But what about men?
Men's Rights tools would have you believe that it's just as difficult for guys, that there's some kind of pressure on them to have rock-hard abs, full heads of hair and big penises, even though virtually all polls repeatedly show that women have no such preferences.
In fact, the vast majority of women find an unnaturally muscular man to be a turn-off. Hilariously, a website called "spotmebro" expressed a lot of confusion and anger when a casual survey found 75% of women preferred slightly chubby men:
spotmebro.com/women-prefer-fat…
Studies also find that about 85% of women are perfectly happy with a male partner's penis size, despite the prevalence of men feeling inadequate in that department:
www.livescience.com/4489-penis…
The pressure men claim to feel to be attractive, you see, is not actually coming from women. It's coming from other men. Men own the magazines that claim women need to be thin and men need to be ripped. Objectification does affect both men and women, but it affects women far more often and more harshly. It is also a product of the cult of masculinity.
Bottom line:
Hostility towards feminism exists because of misinformation, viral "us vs. them" attitudes and a subculture of bitter entitlement dominated by socially inept men who find it easiest to blame "feminists" for things they dislike about the world, regardless of whether those things are even real. They will latch onto anything they can, any one-off example, even so much as some angry tumblr blog, to try and support their paranoid belief that feminism is nothing but an anti-male hate group.
In reality, feminism encompasses millions of people around the world with thousands of beliefs, some of them even internally conflicting, radical and non-radical. What unifies the feminist movement, however, is that it seeks to mitigate the prevalence of discriminatory attitudes towards women, the effects of which are statistically demonstrable. While problems exist that affect men alone, they are generally not systematic, institutionalized efforts to control or suppress the freedom of men on a grand scale as we see against women, nor is there any systematic discrimination against men that has been perpetuated by feminism.
"The practice began for hygenic purposes and there remains evidence that circumcision can reduce the risk of infection by HIV"
1: That has been largely debunked.
2: Even if it were true, 1 in 17 men are afflicted by HIV, are you suggesting we remove a very sensitive and important part of a man for a 1 in 17 safety concern?
Because if so... You do know 1 in 4 women develop breast cancer... is dual mastectomy a healthy and normal thing to start practicing?
As for it affecting women and men though... Well here's a nice little color-coded map to make your bias very easy to see.
imgur.com/a/u6moV
Oh and before I submit comment: "circumcision does not reduce the sensitivity of the penis" That's complete and utter bull and I can speak from first hand experience. Something literally no feminist in America can say about FGM.
And sorry, there is no solid evidence that sexual stimulation is affected by what we do to circumcise an infant. I speak from experience too, so one of us is a liar, and it isn't me
The foreskin is 15 square inches in size (on average)
the clitoris is less than 1 square inch (on average)
The clitoris has 8,000 nerve endings
the foreskin/frendulum (often removed as well) have 20,000.
Your bias still stands. Because scientifically and objectively, what you're doing is worse and that's simple math. You could call me a liar but... That would just show that you also deny hard numbers when they're right in front of you.
Removal of the foreskin does not impair sex.
Nerve endings aren't a numbers game, all nerves are different in sensitivity and purpose. Sensation isn't as simple as "more nerves" and you would know that if you researched scientifically instead of emotionally.
Again, I can speak from experience on my end of the argument. I also have statistics and numbers; something you lack for your side of the case.
I do try my best to focus on other things, but I will say I find it disgusting when people try to justify the forced cosmetic removal of a childs bodypart (regardless of gender or part being removed), and I quite honestly would love to watch those who preform such tasks because of their ignorance, arrogance, and ego rot in prison for their crimes against humanity. Just as they legally would for doing the same exact thing to a female.
Ignorance: They believe what the little churches tell them about it "being healthier and cleaner" (despite never applying the same logic to anything sensical)
Arrogance: "But it's so popular" "but it's tradition" "but I'm jewish/catholic/muslim" "but women prefer it that way, it feels better"
Ego: "Well I look like this so I demand my son look like this too."
And this is primarily something that happens overseas, which makes it rather strange how anti-feminist criticisms usually include both "too much focus on female genital mutilation" AND "you all only pay attention to minor first world problems."
I'd be more impressed if you dealt with the 10 best arguments against feminist ideology.
You say the myth is that "rape" is being overstated, then go on and mention statistics for sexual assault..
You are being somewhat intellectually dishonest there. Yes, 19.5% or something of women reported having been the victims of sexual violence; sexual violence/assault is NOT necessarily the same thing as "rape". Rape is included in that, but so is unwanted groping, unwanted spanking during intercourse, and other things that are not rape.
Then feminists take that 1/5 are victims of sexual assault statistic, and apply it to college campuses saying "1/5 women are raped in college" despite the fact college campuses have a lower rape rate than the general public in most statistics.
This is where you're wrong. Humanism, Egalaritanism, supports rights for all races, sexes and all genders (trans people and non binaries).
Feminism:
</i>fem·i·nism
ˈfeməˌnizəm/Submit
noun
the advocacy of women's rights on the grounds of political, social, and economic equality to men.
synonyms: the women's movement, the feminist movement, women's liberation, female emancipation, women's rights; informalwomen's lib
"a longtime advocate of feminism"

If you were to say that "they are not feminists", you'd be pulling a " no true scotmans" fallacy, which is something that christans and feminists do all the time. However, Egalaritanism supports rights for all kinds of people. If we said "he's not a Egalaritanism!", that wouldn't be a no true scotmans because by the definition, they're not egalaritans.
</I>
So yeah, with that being said, 1st wave feminism only supported rights for white women and it was based on white supremacy (sort of what you accuse MRAs of doing.) www.dadsnow.org/index2.html
I would check out the link.
Anyways, to say that feminism is the same as humanism/Egalaritanism is asinine. I'm aware this is an old journal, but I made several journals debunking feminist arguements.

Your source link is part of an entire website we know is biased against feminism already.
Why do you continue to struggle and flail against feminism? Why is it so important to you to attack it? It isn't in any way what you keep describing it as. You've been duped by the anti-feminism hate movement. Used. Fooled.
Even if my source is biased against feminism , it still is correct.
And it's not like feminists aren't aware of internal racism, sexism and other prejudice. For instance, there's the term "TERF" for feminists who don't recogize trans people. Pretty much everybody agrees TERFS are evil bigots.
In their eyes, white, straight men are being unfairly bullied and oppressed by women, minorities and the LGBT community.
I think these people are simply threatened by these social changes. It’s a stupid fear on their part, and I don’t like it, but it still happens.
It truly disturbs me how vicious people can be when other groups stand up for themselves.
Whether it’s rights for women, rights for racial/ethnic minorities, rights for homosexuals, rights for religious or non-religious people, or rights for trans-people.
Argument: "You're the real misogynist by painting women as victims.”
Ooh boy, apparently stating facts about the disadvantages of women in society makes the speaker look bad.
I wonder if some putz would use that argument if people discussed the subjugation of women in Middle Eastern nations, or the culture of wanting sons instead of daughters in India and China.
It’s bad mental gymnastics to paint facts as embellishments. And I see that all the time with anti-feminists.
Argument: "Men only become feminists because they'll get more sex."
Or male feminists might ACTUALLY support equality for women, and they actually see women as human beings!
Some people LOVE to throw ulterior motives around. It’s annoying.
But then there are odd, phony feminists like
who strangely fetishize women somehow— like, they don’t see them as equals, but they love complaining about women’s inequality. Preston doesn’t seem to want sex, just approval and attention.
Of course, it’s great that there are plenty of men who genuinely understand and support feminism. That means they want equality for their fellow humans.
Argument: "If feminists cared about equality they would just be called humanists."
I see that one ALL THE TIME, and it drives me nuts.
First of all, “Humanism” as a term is already taken, and it is defined as:
“An outlook or system of thought attaching prime importance to human rather than divine or supernatural matters. Humanist beliefs stress the potential value and goodness of human beings, emphasize common human needs, and seek solely rational ways of solving human problems.”
…Oh, who am I kidding? They’re just angry that there’s a term out there with an etymology that indicates the female sex.
And you’re correct. Discrimination and maltreatment against women are a world issue. But many anti-feminists only complain about North American and west European feminists like they speak for the whole planet. It’s inaccurate on their part, but they sure love to embellish stuff like that. Feh, it’s not like they sincerely care about the state of the world, anyway
Argument: "False rape accusations are an understated issue"
There’s no doubt that false crime reports and accusations are be a hassle.
Obviously, feminists do not encourage shit like making a false rape accusation against somebody. Actually, I doubt that ANYbody would encourage that (unless it was a particularly ghastly “defense attorney”).
As I’ve said before, a lot of anti-feminists like to distort facts to support their flimsy argument. And it’s likely that they don’t do enough research regarding crime statistics. The latter is not completely perfect (considering some crimes are not even reported in the first place), but still--
And it’s definitely a fact that genuine rape victims are highly likely to withdraw accusations out of fear or shame.
Argument: "Rape of women is OVERstated"
Well, it doesn’t take a genius to figure out that’s bullshit!
If I’m not mistaken, rape is among the RAREST of violent crimes, unreported or otherwise, usually for the reasons in your previous argument.
Regarding the rape of men, it definitely happens, and it’s deeply unfortunate on the victim’s part that they are afraid of stigma, and they don’t want to report the crime. The same goes for non-sexual physical violence against men.
Argument: "Women just don't want certain jobs."
Ah, yes, I’ve seen this often. Like: “There aren’t enough female doctors, scientists, and CEOS. …the number of coal miners, garbage collectors, and janitors are fine.”
Folks, nobody wants to be a coal miner or a garbage collector, or a janitor. And I’ve actually seen quite a few female janitors or “cleaning ladies”, in hotels, offices, grocery stores, and college buildings.
Also, you’re right that men are still preferred over women when it comes to being hired in general.
I think there was a study in which people were more receptive to a man’s resume over a woman’s, despite the names being switched to a man’s.
Argument: “Male Rape Isn't Taken as Seriously”
Indeed. According to the FBI, the official definition of rape is:
“Penetration, no matter how slight, of the vagina or anus with any body part or object, or oral penetration by a sex organ of another person, without the consent of the victim.”
This new definition went into effect on January 1, 2013
That definitely applies to men as well.
It’s truly unfortunate that men are shamed into believing that they should not express their problems in fear of stigma for being “weak”. Hell, it’s awful.
I’ve noticed that sexual assault and rape in the military (against men and women alike) is gaining recognition as a serious problem. While I’m happy that this issue is getting more attention, there’s still a lot of work to be done about it. …And in a professional setting like the military-- damn. It makes me wonder about how these monsters pass the psychological evaluation.
The fact that shameless punks accuse feminists of downplaying the seriousness of male rape or sexual assault also disturbs me. Anything for attention.
Argument: “Men are just as objectified.”
While the ideal man may be seen as tall, handsome, athletic, and muscular, there doesn’t seem to be any pressure to make average Joes aspire to be as attractive— as opposed to women.
As you said, people love to ridicule women showing their age, or their physical imperfections.
Heh, and you’re right about how women are turned off by super-muscular guys. There’s nothing wrong with an ordinary body type. It’s objectively healthier than overworking your muscles until they don’t even look natural anymore, or being morbidly obese.
------------------------------------------------
Regarding your conclusion— blaming other people (whether groups or individuals) is nothing new, and it does not surprise me that this mindset dislikes feminism as well.
The “us vs. them” attitude is always toxic and divisive, and the people who perpetuate it don’t care about actually solving a real issue.
You are also correct that feminism involves a wide-ranging gamut of beliefs the world over. It’s not just a catch-all thing, after all.
I also found this crap today: forum.deviantart.com/community…
But you what? This just signifies that we as people still have a lot to do when it comes to bringing about basic equality and justice— and teaching others.
As someone who's followed you for years and used to look up to you as a great person, I can't tell if you've simply been hugely misled or if you're actively going out of your way to misinform people.
Read the freaking .pdf you link and you'll realize that the CDC only considers it "rape" if penetration is involved; "made to penetrate" is treated as "sexual assault", which is supposedly different from "rape" (hint: it fucking isn't). If you do the math, about 6% of men experience rape.
The study also considers "attempted forced penetration" to be rape, which means that they literally equate attempted rape to completed rape. The disingenuous nature of this aside, there is no "attempted made to penetrate" number, which means, by their own logic, the number of male rape victims should be higher. Let's say 8%.
Now let's add male rape victims who couldn't have responded, given that HOUSEHOLDS were interviewed: those in the military, and those in prison. That should give you a pretty freakin' big number.
Come on, man. You used to be one of the sole beacons of common sense on Tumblr. This is just depressing as shit.
Women still experience more sexual assault than men however you slice it, even assuming that up to five times more men have been raped than admit to it.
We do in fact know that it's epidemic in the military. In fact, rape by a higher ranking man is a more common cause of PTSD than combat situations.
Prison rape, on the other hand, is mostly media sensationalism. The truth is there's enormous amounts of consensual sex in prison.
If he dislikes where your opinions are headed you're going in the right direction.
I guess some Tumblr people will say "RAINN aren't REAL feminists!" but "no true Scotsman" aside most of the main staff are female and I highly doubt most of them would say "no" when asked if they are feminists (and the guys probably would say they are too). And yet, even though they do talk about male rape victims sometimes, their "who are the victims" pages are deeply disingenuous and showcase all the misleading info I talked about in my first comment.
Many modern feminist memes focus on men being the perpetrators of rape, but very, very rarely the victims; just look at how big the "poison M&Ms" picture got. I personally know a male rape victim who was laughed out of an all-female rape support group. Yes women get raped more but the actual male number is big enough that the issue of rape should not be treated in such a way. Jonathan McIntosh of Feminist Frequency openly promoted the "1 out of 71" statistic to show "rape is a toxic masculinity issue" and what did he and Anita get out of it? Millions of dollars from Intel.
Even if he just didn't know, it's still pretty damning; the man is literally a full-time feminist. Gender issues are the first thing he SHOULD know about.
I honestly believe the "rape = penetration" legislation could easily be changed if there was enough push-back, and a significant feminist push-back would contribute hugely and be a fantastic PR move for the movement. As of now the only people mentioning it are MRAs, and as we know a bunch of goofy redditors will never have an impact on legislation.

One thing is equality, that's excellent, a sign of a truly civilized society... the rest is just the same stupidness of the past, only reversed. Revenge is not justice, it's just revenge.
You're right. Morality certainly does not depend on one's gender, and hiring an all woman transit police force is a misguided attempt to curb corruption.
Anyway, I believe that all extremes in social causes are harmfun for people and culture, and certainly things like these, or buses just for women (another strange iniciative gong on) do not encourage equality... They're just another form of discrimination.
And you are right about how any kind of extreme in a social cause is harmful to society in general. It actually damages the original cause for real justice.
But, there is an interesting point raised here; is "equality" REALLY always enough?
I mean, my country kidnapped black people, used them, raped them, killed them, forced them to work so much that they helped build the entire new country itself.
DOES just freeing them and giving them the same legal rights honestly erase and fix all that? If you're beaten and abused at home, is it "enough" for your abuser to just stop, or should you expect an effort to compensate you?
And it's not as if equality has really been achieved here in the states anyway. Black people are still more likely to be punished for minor crimes than white people, more likely to be rejected from jobs and schools...
What happened historically with Black people was a pretty messed up thing, and lots of people died or were otherwise mistreated by other people who thought they were "superior" but i believe there IS no point in making ammends to the dead, over the Years they have been fighting for their rights, and the rights have been given. The white people who did such terrible things in the past are also dead, and the ones alive today are different people... I dunno, i just don't believe in revenge. It does not solve anything, it just causes more hate.
It can be demonstrated that black people are several times more likely to be sent to prison than white people, and it is not because of a higher crime rate; if you have access to court records in your own area you would be able to see for yourself that when a white and black man commit the same crime, the black man gets prison time more often, and for longer. Black people are also convicted on far less evidence, or when they committed no crime at all, they get prison for "resisting arrest," which anyone will do when they know they're innocent, and "resisting arrest" is such a vaguely defined term that a cop can just say you squirmed too much.
America has the world's largest prison population, goes out of its way to send minorities to prison more often, and makes money off that system. Prison labor is a multi-billion-dollar industry here.
Also, many of the politicians alive today were already alive when we still had segregation. Some were even in politics back then, to vote against it. It was only formally ended in the late 60's. The Ku Klux Klan also makes an effort to have members in powerful positions.
We stopped "officially" having slaves but those who control our country have made progress as slow as possible and use the justice system to continue unfair labor for minorities.
*unrolls scroll*
*scroll rolls down 3 flights of stairs*
if only these kinds of people would fucking listen though
Of course, statistics also show that of all social media websites, including tumblr, instagram and facebook, Deviantart has the very youngest audience with an average age of only 21, meaning almost half of Deviantartists are teens. It explains a lot.
