Eurovision nightGot myself some ice cream and will be making myself compfy on the sofa so I'm ready for the big, glittery, horrible music, camp, pointless politics, drama that is eurovision. It never disappoints me. :la:
Sadly I will be alone for this one. Matt had to do a concert he didn't want to do, so I will be live tweeting (humonlazydiva) my impression of the whole shebang. :D
The Echo chamber dilemmaThe promise of the Internet was that unlimited information and experiences would draw us together. But instead it seems to have driven us apart.
For years I've observed this behavior but haven't been able to vocalize it correctly. Originally I called the behavior of collective opinions as "the hive mentality" of the Internet. But that wasn't exactly right and I often got called out on it. The most prominent example was when I made a comic about a guy disagreeing with opinions and being shouted at till he remained quiet, eventually fading into the background with everyone else. The consensus of that comic was that if you disagree with someone you aren't bullied into not speaking, but instead are free to go someplace else where people who do agree with you exist. And you know what? That wasn't what i was trying to convey, but is sadly true. The Internet is not a hive mind. It's many tiny pocket echo chambers of mutual agreements.

It's been years since I've posted about my internets forum and I know some of you never felt like posting because they were mostly off topic and sometimes hostile.

Half the members have recently  spun off now into a forum of their own for those reasons, so the place is basically undergoing a reboot! It's always been a forum where people primarily talk about fun, strange things that they like, however obscure, and never ever bring up politics, religion or why their lives suck. There's otherwise no rules, except invisionfree might shut the place down for anything too NSFW on the public parts, and I guess we have to delete spammers and trolls.

Oh wow, this makes me remember some good times on Bogleech forums. Designing Pokemon for that fan-hack especially, was great fun, even if it didn't get made.

I remember making an account but never posting because of "close circle friends" syndrome, i.e. that you all seemed to be very aware of each other since the early days of the forums and anyone wanting to get in wouldn't get the same kind of reception. It happens way too much on traditional message boards, and is one of their biggest disadvantages.

Also, I didn't really want to see Chupa's dickhair as I randomly browsed the topics.
