Mortasheen - Sporrendous by scythemantis Mortasheen - Sporrendous by scythemantis
"The Bugblight"

CLASS: BOTANICAL

Colloquially known to Arthropoid monsters as "(a case of) the Jeepers Creepers," this parasitic fungoid can complete its development only in the body of an Arthropoid, or more slowly, in a pure human. Once mature, the monster commandeers the host's mummified corpse, externalizes its ocular brain pods and begins producing thousands of spores. Any organic and semi-organic being is susceptible to infection, but non-human, non-arthropoid hosts are reduced to little more than blind, mindless puppets of the parent fungus, producing no viable spores of their own.

Sporrendous may retain the memories and personality of their original host, but experience a sense of having been "awakened" or "set free," a feeling they are often eager to share. Nonviable host species are regarded by some Sporrendous with pity and disgust; perpetually blind "wretches" suitable only as personal slaves.

Okay, I love the design as it is but it's the description that really does it for me. Aww, these guys almost sound nice! They just want to share the secret to eternal happiness with the world! Now I can totally imagine them as some kind of weird religious sect or something.

Now, physically this lil monster does not scare much :3 Me at least, but by the description... fruk x3 I wouldnt want THAT thing near me except if I get a good environmental suit all over myself, 3 of them if posible, all tight and shut x3. This is one of the few designs I think I would not get close at all, if I could get away with it.

In resume: Nicely made :3

Also, you have done a cordyceps before; isn't Scumbat part cordyceps/part mi-go?

If it is, it's probably a Contaminat, but yeah, I decided not to go with one obvious one.

Scumbat has a cordyceps life cycle too, yeah, this is just the first cordyceps-with-host monster :D

I love how you reinterpreted the pods as whimsical eyes, but I can't say I'm surprised by your choice :)

I also have to say you really got me hooked on this spooky concept of a creature basically "replaced" by a fungus, driving the parasect-idea to its logical extremes.

Also I want to make fan art now trying this out on different arthropoids.

That too!

Back in the 40's and 50's though was the biggest boom in monster obsession America ever saw, and it was so standard for them to have huge, freaky eyeballs that fans referred to them as B.E.M.'s or "Bug Eyed Monsters." I really do find big cartoony eyes cooler and creepier than the narrow, angrier ones most monsters are given now.

It's where the Pokemon Beheeyem got its name! (You have to say it aloud)

Cordyceps! I'm surprised it took you this long to make a monster like this :P

I was never sure exactly how I wanted to do it, categorize it and design its powers...but I came up with this whole design and description just this morning! It wasn't even one of my pre-planned Halloween additions :)

Well the final design is just wonderful. If you ignore the fact the main body is a fungus-encrusted arthropoid, the whole thing looks like a quadruped with eyestalks and a big honking nose
