"Corpse Cap"

CLASS: BIOCONSTRUCT

Genetically engineered from a combination of fungal and animal tissues, this squat, waddling and dim-witted creature makes a surprisingly devastating control mechanism against zombie infestation. Excited by the presence of decaying flesh, its body begins to swell and eventually ruptures, splattering its surroundings with a quivering, reddish-brown jelly that rapidly multiplies as it breaks down flesh. Dead and undead alike are converted almost instantly into glistening piles of ooze, each of which will harden into a large, leathery pod and eventually germinate a single young Funguslyme.

Until they mature and ripen, funguslyme feed on a wide variety of organic materials with a curious fondness for the eggs of frogs and toads.

Art Stuff:

I had to have a mushroom monster, but I couldn't find a good way to make it disturbing without playing up their inherent suggestiveness. Don't blame me, though...this was also inspired by a japanese Youkai monster, Nuppeppo, who is similarly Freudian, especially in the children's film, The Great Yokai War:

Delightfully disturbing anti-zombie wildlife which would probably grow near zombie cities, and cultured near human cities for protection. However can we still look forward to the weapon rusting Yechy.
Nuppepo... reminds me of the D&D monster called "Nupperibo". Maybe the former inspired the latter?

Either way, nice work. And nice bit of bonus amusement by making the "corpse cap" resemble the Amanita mushroom, AKA the Deathcap fungus.

Yeah, nuppeppo is sometimes also called nupperabou, I think a number of the D&D demons are distortions of obscure mythological beings.

Ah, I was right.

BTW, I checked out the site. One thing puzzles me about the "Mortasheen" setting, though...

A lot of the monsters, for various reasons, are referred to as being used by humans for various purposes like security, property-care, and even babysitting and general companionship.

Yet many of those same monsters are spoken of as often using humans as prey. How do their owners keep from having "problems" with controlling their monstrous friends? I mean, sure, little Billy loves playing with his new pet Fevile, but how can Mom and Dad be sure they won't wake up one day with their beloved child (or themselves) disemboweled by "Mister Mittens" because the ghoulish little goblin-cat decided the people around him would make a better meal than the butcher's scraps and kitty-treats he'd previously seemed to enjoy?

Well, the dominant inhabitants of Mortasheen, the monster creators and trainers, are more commonly super/ex-human or just monsters themselves, while normal humans are the lowest class of citizen, most of them kidnapped from neighboring lands where they are in no short supply or eking out a living in Mortasheen's sewers.

There's also the fact that death in Mortasheen is often just a temporary inconvenience, with a whole city of Frankensteins it just means your brain will wake up in something new :)
A rather grotesque, but satisfactory, explanation. Thank you.

incidentally, great job with the arms in particular! I'm also fond of what I imagine are the 'gill ridges' under the cap
your stuff is awesome! I love your website!
