MORTASHEEN - Longfellow by scythemantis MORTASHEEN - Longfellow by scythemantis
"The Looming Stranger"

CLASS: UNKNOWN

While a growing number of trainers appear to have one of these mysterious beings in their employ, none can recollect precisely how or why the relationship began, as specific, detailed memories pertaining to the beings simply fail to form. Those regularly associating with a Longfellow can readily recall the outcomes of its actions - such as whether or not it successfully neutralized a threat - but never the actions themselves. Even those who survive an aggressive close encounter with the Longfellow cannot remember how it inflicted its signature spiral-shaped scars, but may suffer a long-term sense of being followed or watched, and many who have crossed one seem to disappear without a trace.

A Longfellow is only faintly visible from any angle but the front, and all witnesses - even recording devices - simultaneously perceive its "cap" angled towards the viewer, hiding whatever "head" or "face" it may possess and sometimes illuminated from behind by an intense, white light of unknown nature. Scanning equipment reads the monster as a freezing cold, empty space.

Absolutely cunning monster, you took something already very scary and made it much more unique and terrifying just by your image -alone-.

I am going to say THIS monster is the newest thing I would readily employ in my team if I had one o3o Though for some reason, and I am serious, I feel like a pair of revolvers would fall nicely into this guy's hands.

The awesome factor instilled by the off the charts creepy factor is similarly off the charts. Everything about this Longfellow, from design to the text info you gave, is so perfect. The story of them, how no one can remember specifics, the thing about the "cap," CLASS: UNKNOWN, "The Looming Stranger," scanning equipment sees it as cold empty space. Oh man this is spine-tinglingly creepy and I just want to make zillions upon zillions of creepy things now. Totally inspired.

I could fangasm over this forever.

I dunno why but I suddenly got an image of one of these things sitting at a table playing cards, and then realized that they'd make excellent gambling cheaters, since nobody would be able to perceive them cheating, only see them winning all the time.

There's no "if!" Work has proceeded steadily on the book and if some catastrophe happened where it couldn't be finished for some reason (which would mean almost everyone involved dying) it would just get released anyway as-is.

Agreed, this would lend itself very well towards a tattoo design - simply form with clear lines, yet just enough detail to hold a viewer's interest.

A female friend of mine could see putting it in the centerline of her torso starting at the top of the sternum with the arm bones wrapping around the brease and the hands clutching them with the toe bones reaching to the vulva.

I love this. I know you have a policy of making everything in Mortasheen explainable by scientific means, but the mysterious monsters like this slender guy are what REALLY interest me. No way to explain it, little way to fight it, and you can't even remember it.
Damn cool.

Sounds like he's based off of old tales of Shadow Men. I've had dreams like that, about tall, hat-wearing shadowy figures who appear out of the corner of your eye and vanish when you look their way.

Niice. Creepy AND stylish. Despite the seemingly-intended Slenderman reference, I'm also somewhat reminded of that one long-legged ghost from the Gammell-illustrated Scary Stories, a ghost which utterly terrified me as a child for no clear reason (which I believe I mentioned on last year's Halloween gallery about Gammell's illustrations), though I only get that impression when scrolling down the full-size image and see just how long its arms and legs are when the torso scrolls off the screen. It loses that effect as a thumbnail.

Yeah, I thought a bit about Gammell's ghosts, also scarecrows, the men in black, stranger danger, Junji Ito...loads of things went into this one XD

Tomorrow is something not so "referential" or enigmatic but then the 31st's entry, if I can finish it in time, will be crazy :p
